Overview

The Word Wheel is a Java™ applet. To use it, you need a browser that supports Java and JavaScript, such as version 3.0 or later of Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer.

The Word Wheel dialog appears when you click a Word Wheel button on a search page. The dialog shows information about documents on this web site. For example, if you are searching a "Classic Movies" site, you can see a list of movie titles. The Word Wheel uses Index Streaming™ technology to download only the part of the index you are browsing, to minimize load on the server. By pasting an item such as "Gone with the Wind" into a box, you can search for it. This eliminates trial-and-error searching, to produce more accurate searches.

What to Do

  1. In the Word Wheel dialog, click in the Choices List, then select an item using the keyboard keys (arrow keys, PgUp, PgDn, Home, End). -OR- Type characters in the Find box then click Go to to move directly to that item or the nearest match.
  2. Click Paste to paste the item into the currently selected search box, so you can search for it.
  3. If desired, paste other items to search for.
If you paste multiple items, an "OR" search is done (Casablanca OR Beetlejuice).
  4. Optionally, use the Words List and Terms List controls to switch between viewing words or terms, as explained below.

Dialog Controls

Each part of the dialog is explained below.

Find / Go to

Type a word or phrase then click the Go to button to move to that item (or to the closest matching item) in the Choices List.

Choices List / Keys / Hits

The Choices List shows actual information that you can search for. The Keys list shows indexed words or terms. The Hits list indicates the number of documents that contain that word or term in the field being viewed.

Words List / Terms List

Contents from documents on this web site are indexed as words, terms, or both. A term is a complete entry, such as the title of a document. If a field, such as "Title", has both types of indexes, you can switch between them. For example, the Terms List shows the complete title of each document ("Gone with the Wind"), while the Words List shows each word individually. This enables you to search for a single word (just "wind") or a complete term.

Field

Each field holds certain information about a document. For example, the Title field holds document titles. The Field list shows which field you are viewing. Select a different field from the list to see information stored in that field. You can paste words or terms from any field listed, to search for the pasted item(s). When you submit your query ("Go Get It"), all of the fields in the droplist will be searched. For example, the box labeled "Any word or phrase" searches Text, Title, Headings, and Keywords.

Paste

Click Paste to copy the selected item from the Choices List into the search box. You can paste more than one item (one at a time). A Boolean "OR" symbol is added between items that you paste. For example, if you paste "bogart" and "bacall" the search box will contain bogart / bacall. When you submit the query, you will find documents about Bogart OR Bacall (or both). Before submitting the query, you can change the Boolean symbol to & (which represents AND) or ! (which represents NOT).

Troubleshooting

Having trouble using a Word Wheel? Some of the most common problems are listed below.

The Word Wheel buttons don't appear or don't work.

Word Wheel buttons provide access to a Java (tm) applet that allows you to browse a list of words that you can search for. To display Word Wheel buttons and run the Word Wheel applet, you need a browser that supports Java and JavaScript, such as version 3.0 or later of Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer. If you are using Internet Explorer, set the options to run ActiveX scripts and enable Java programs. Note that the 16-bit version of Internet Explorer does not support Java correctly. Use the 32-bit version.

The Word Wheel dialog is empty.

Try selecting a different field from the "Field" drop-list in the Word Wheel dialog. If the drop-list does not contain any other fields, this web site's catalog (database) may be inaccessible, missing, or damaged. Another possibility is that your web browser does not support Java and JavaScript. Obtain a newer version of the browser. If you are using Internet Explorer, note that the 16-bit version does not support Java correctly. Use the 32-bit version.
